Stress Awareness Month - April 2026: Moving Beyond Awareness to Action

Here at Holla HR, we’d like to take this opportunity to draw attention to Stress Awareness Month — with this year’s focus on individuals and organisations making a shift from simply acknowledging workplace stress to proactively implementing actionable steps to support and reduce it.

What is Workplace Stress?

Workplace stress can manifest in a variety of ways. Typically, it may look like reduced productivity, withdrawal, or lack of motivation. However, it can also present as perfectionism, overworking, or appearing highly engaged in order to mask underlying pressure.

This is something all employers should take seriously; not only because of their duty of care and investment in the wellbeing of their staff, but also because of the wider impact on the team and the business.

If you’ve read our blogs, follow our socials, or know about us, you’ll know that at Holla HR we’re all about people. We strongly advocate for how much the wellbeing of your team can influence the success of your business.

There is a healthy level of stress known as Eustress which is where the idea of a deadline or needing to demonstrate an outstanding performance actually gives us the adrenaline to motivate and drive us to achieve. However, it's a fine balance between this type of stress and the alternative chronic stress that can manifest in someone's physical health and mental well-being. The aim is to get this balance right and allow people to flourish in the 'sweet spot' - and spoiler, this will be different for everyone!

Because stress is experienced differently by each individual, it can often be difficult to recognise. In some cases, individuals experiencing stress don’t even identify it in themselves until they reach the point of burnout.

It is therefore important that employers actively encourage openness; not just giving employees the opportunity to raise concerns when they are feeling stressed, but creating regular opportunities for those conversations and promoting ways to reduce stress within the workplace.

The Impact within the Workplace

There is still a stigma around mental health and stress in the workplace. Many individuals worry that admitting they are struggling may be perceived as an inability to cope with their role. As a result, stress can often remain hidden.

Workplace stress can present itself in ways that aren’t always expected. For some, it may show up as reduced productivity, withdrawal from colleagues or a lack of motivation

Rather than withdrawing, some individuals may respond by overperforming — working longer hours, taking on more responsibility than necessary, and pushing themselves beyond healthy limits.

This is what makes stress so complex, as there is no single, obvious way it presents.

That’s why it’s so important for employers to move beyond surface-level awareness and build environments where stress can be identified early and addressed appropriately.

Employers can make a difference starting today!

There are many ways employers can support and reduce stress at work, and it often starts with small, consistent changes.

Something simple can be the difference between someone continuing to struggle in silence and someone choosing to open up and seek support.

Here are some practical steps employers can start implementing immediately:

  • Encourage open conversations and build a supportive culture

  • Set realistic and clear expectations

  • Support and train managers to recognise and respond to stress

  • Actively promote wellbeing and a healthy work-life balance

  • Carry out regular, genuine check-ins with employees

Taking a Proactive Approach

The key message this Stress Awareness Month is the importance of being proactive, and not waiting for stress to become a problem before taking action.

By making meaningful, proactive changes, employers can create a more supportive working environment. This doesn’t just strengthen individuals; it benefits the entire organisation.
